I wanted to provide you with an update regarding Road safety issues (Speeding), which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey. π¦ Community Speedwatch β Making Roads Safer Kent Police runs Community Speedwatch, a volunteer-led initiative focused on reducing speeding and improving safety. What is Speedwatch? π₯ Local volunteers, trained by Kent Police, monitor speeds at approved sites (20, 30, or 40 mph zones) using certified equipment. π Details of speeding vehicles are securely logged for 12 months. Repeat or excessive offenders may receive advisory lettersβand in some cases, personal visits from officers. Important: Speedwatch is educational, not enforcement. No fines or penalty points are issued directly, but the data helps target police action and inform road safety improvements. β
Does it work? Yes! Over 90% of drivers recorded speeding once are not seen again within 12 months, and overall speeding reduces in communities over time. π Want to help? If you can spare an hour a week, join us! π www.kent.police.uk/speedwatch I have received several reports from residents raising concerns about the speed of vehicles in the Cranbrook area. I want to reassure the community that this feedback is being taken seriously.
Excessive speed is a significant risk to road safety, particularly within residential roads, and we all have a shared responsibility to help reduce this.
I would like to encourage members of the community to consider setting up a Community Speedwatch scheme. This is a volunteer-led initiative where residents can work alongside police to monitor vehicle speeds and help educate drivers. I will fully support anyone interested in starting or joining a scheme.
In addition, I will be carrying out random speed checks in Cranbrook to address the concerns raised and to deter unsafe driving.
