Electric Bike and Scooters - Know the law!

With the improving weather, we’ve noticed more people choosing electric scooters and electric bikes as a way to get around. It’s great to see everyone enjoying the outdoors and staying active. However, we have also seen a few instances where these vehicles are being used in ways that don’t meet legal requirements.

Attached are a couple of posters that outline the key rules for both electric scooters and electric pedal-assisted bikes.

In brief:

Private electric scooters must not be used on public roads, pavements, or public land. They are classed as motor vehicles, which means they require insurance and an MOT—neither of which can currently be obtained for privately owned scooters.

Electric pedal-assisted bikes (E-bikes) must comply with legal limits on motor wattage and the maximum speed at which the motor provides assistance.
