Seizure of foreign vehicles for having no tax.

A vehicle in Canterbury Street Gillingham, on foreign number plates, had been reported multiple times to PC Ranaweera. The Vehicle had been fined many times by Medway council and was often a source of antisocial behaviour in the community.

Yesterday afternoon PC Ranaweera and I seized this vehicle for not having paid UK road tax.

The laws around driving foreign vehicles on UK roads are as follows.

Foreign vehicles must be taxed in the UK if.

  • The vehicle has been in the UK continuously for 6 months or more.
  • The vehicle is owned or kept by a UK resident.
  •

It is not the normal procedure for police to seize a vehicle for no Tax. Normally the DVLA are the agency that will clamp and collect untaxed vehicles however due to this particular vehicle causing such a nuisance in the are PC Ranaweera chose to exercise DVLA powers and seize the vehicle on there behalf.

If you have issues with an untaxed vehicle, please report it to the DVLA using this link.

    Report an untaxed vehicle - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

If you have an Untaxed vehicle in your area that is also involved in crime and antisocial behaviour it is well worth mentioning to police because if we can’t do anything else with it, we can help our DVLA partners and seize it for no tax.
