Staying Safe on Bonfire Night


Good afternoon,

Many of you will attending organised firework displays this weekend including the annual fireworks display at Walsall Arboretum this Saturday. (Admission is by advance ticket only). 

Bonfire Night can be a fun and exciting time for everyone, but it's important to stay safe and be aware of the dangers associated with fireworks. 

Here are some tips for staying safe on Bonfire Night:

  • Only buy fireworks from reputable retailers and make sure they have the CE mark.
  • Read the instructions on each firework carefully before using it.
  • Light fireworks outdoors and away from people, property, and flammable materials.
  • Always wear eye protection when lighting fireworks.
  • Never hold a firework in your hand when lighting it.
  • Never relight a firework that has failed to go off.
  • Keep a bucket of water or a hose nearby in case of fire.
  • Supervise children closely at all times.
  • Attend an organised firework display if possible.
  • If you are having a bonfire at home, make sure it is in a safe location and that you have a bucket of water or a fire extinguisher nearby.
  • Keep an eye on your belongings and don't leave them unattended.
  • It is illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to possess a firework, flare or smoke bomb.

    If you see someone using fireworks in a dangerous or irresponsible way, call the police on 101, or 999 in an emergency.

    West Midlands Fire Service have lots of advice on staying safe while celebrating. 

    If you are experiencing anti-social behaviour, such as noise nuisance or criminal damage, also call the police on 101. You can also report anti-social behaviour and fireworks misuse online via our Live Chat facility, available 8am – midnight.
