A prolific shoplifter has been jailed
A 45 year old male, of no fixed address, was arrested on Friday 25 October for 12 offences of theft from a shop and a breach of his Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO).
He was remanded in custody to appear before Brighton Magistrates’ Court the following day, where he pleaded guilty to all 13 offences and was given a custodial term 8 months.
The offences saw him repeatedly target stores, including a number of thefts committed at the Co-Operative in Green Street, Eastbourne.
Chief Inspector Andy Nicklin, lead on business crime for East Sussex, said: “This is a great outcome for the businesses he targeted.
“During his time offending he caused a significant amount of disturbance and unrest for the staff involved, in addition to the financial loss incurred by the stores affected.
“We are determined in our efforts to effectively tackle business crime in the area, and we will continue to ensure that offenders are held accountable.”
Communities and businesses are encouraged to report online or via 101, and by calling 999 in an emergency.
Night Safety Marshalls - keeping you safe
Ensuring everyone could spook safely this Halloween, Officers from your Eastbourne Neighbourhood Policing Team joined Night Safety Marshall's (NSM) on patrols across the town last weekend*.
Each weekend between 8pm-4am (Friday and Saturday) additional Police patrols join the NSM teams offering not only a high visibility Police presence to deter crime, ASB and violence associated with the night-time economy; but also to support vulnerable members of the public, who may be a risk or subject to violence, unwanted behaviours or in need of a safe space.
In recent months, the Night Safety Marshals have already assisted in providing support to many vulnerable men and women by way of helping them to reunite with friends and family, contact the Police or assist them in getting home safely; as well as highlighting and supporting to help resolve incidents of public disorder, helping to lower the levels of crime attributed by the night-time economy in the town centre over the weekend.
Together we continue to work hard to ensure everybody is able to enjoy a night out safely and without fear of violence, Eastbourne is, and will continue to be, a safe place to do this, and our continued thanks goes out to the NSM team, and Eastbourne Street Pastors who continue to offer help and support to our communities.
*(Police and NSM are out every Friday and Saturday between 8pm-4am).
Business crime reduction patrols
Officers have been out and about visiting retail areas as we quickly approach the busy Christmas period. Drink driver arrested
Whilst on patrol early last week, officers responded to reports of an RTC off Whitley road.
After receiving reports of a car having hit parked vehicles along the road, officers had reason to believe the driver of the car had been driving under the influence.
Following a road side breath test, the driver provided a sample of breath recorded at four time over the legal limit, and as a result was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.
The driver was further arrested for driving a vehicle without insurance, or valid MOT, in addition to driving whilst disqualified - the driver has been bailed and will soon be in court.
Officers on duty said: “The driver was lucky to not have caused injury to themselves and the wider public.
We continue to highlight the dangers of driving whilst under the influence of either alcohol or drugs throughout the year.
It is a timely reminder as we slowly approach into the Christmas season; is a disqualification for drink driving the early Christmas present you were asking for?
If you know anybody who is driving after having consumed alcohol, please call us on 999”.
