Recent Increase in Number Plates Thefts in our Area

Dear Members

We have recently noticed a rise in vehicle number plate thefts in our area. Stolen number plates are often used in criminal activities on cloned vehicles to commit further crimes such as thefts, burglaries, or speeding offences. It is important to stay vigilant and take precautions to protect your vehicles.

Here are some steps to help prevent number plates theft.

1. Use Number Plates Security Screws: Install security screws specifically designed for number plates. These make it much harder for offenders to remove your plates.

2. Park in Secure Areas: Whenever possible, park in well-lit and secure areas. If you park your vehicle on the drive, make sure your drive has good lighting and is covered by CCTV/Ring door bell.

3. Stay Alert: If you notice any suspicious behaviour around parked vehicles, please report it to the police. Please make sure you are checking your vehicle registration plates are in place before setting off.

4. If You Find a Discarded Number Plate Report It: Contact the police on the non-emergency number (101) or online to report its location.

If you are a victim of theft of number plates and receive any speeding or parking fine letters from areas which you have not visited yourself, call 101 ( 999 emergency line ) so that the crime can be updated and further enquiries can be made.

By staying aware and working together, we can help prevent and address this issue in our community. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our area safe.

Best Regards

Tips to prevent vehicle crime:

  • Ensure you lock doors and shut windows when leaving your vehicle unattended.
  • Always remove keys, even if you’re just stopping to buy fuel.
  • Never leave valuables in your vehicle, even carrier bags – not even in the glove box or boot.
  • Be aware of your keys.  Don’t leave them unattended, or in pockets in changing rooms, or visible through your windows or front door.
  • If you have a vicinity key, keep it in a signal blocking pouch away from the front of your house.
  • Store car ownership documents at home, not in your car.
  • Secure number plates with anti-theft screws.
