Christmas Security advice As our Christmas season rapidly approaches, we at North Yorkshire Police would like to remind everyone to stay vigilant regarding safety and security at home and within ‘your’ community. The holiday period is a time of celebration, but it can also be a time when opportunistic crimes can take place, such as thefts and burglaries. Below are some important tips and advice to help keep you, your loved ones, and your property safe over the Christmas period: Regarding your home and outbuilding(s): 1. Secure your Home and outbuildings: Ensure that all doors and windows are locked, even when you’re at home. Also consider upgrading locks if needed. 2. Door Bell Cameras: Please make sure if the cameras are battery operated that they’re charged on a regular basis and in good working order, with the camera lenses cleaned. 3. CCTV: Please make sure that all your cameras are in working order for recording and that the correct times are shown on your display. Also check that they’re connected to your internet if they’re WiFi operated. 4. Alarm Systems: Test your home alarm system and ensure that it’s working properly. *Ask yourself, when did you last test it* 5. Outdoor Lighting: Use motion sensor lights in order to deter any intruders. Timers for indoor lights can also give the appearance that someone is home when you’re away and can be a good idea and give that extra reassurance. 6. Package Deliveries: You might be expecting deliveries, if so, please arrange for someone to receive them or try use secure local collection points if you have them nearby. Avoid if possible leaving packages on your doorstep. 7. Protect your valuables: I know a lot of people place presents underneath their Christmas trees around this time of year, which is all part of the Christmas fun, however please keep these out of view of anyone passing by your property. On an evening, please also close all curtains and leave blinds down in order to stop and prevent anyone looking into your property.
