Trigger Fraud Alert #20 (November 2024)

Dear Resident,

We have a new trigger fraud alert for you in relation to Bank Phone Fraud targeting the Beverley area.

We have been informed by Humberside Police that fraudsters are contacting victims in the Beverley area portraying to be from the Victim’s Bank. The fraudster will give an urgent reason why the Victim needs to transfer money, set up a new account, allow remote access, click on a link or ask for your account details.

The fraudsters use different variants of this type of fraud;  Someone is hacking your bank account, there problem with your account, unusual or out of town transactions on your account.

The fraud is made more believable as they know which bank you use.  The fraudster will create an urgent reason why you need to move your money.   Instruct you to pay your money into a secure account or get you to type in your personal details, one-time password or the 3 digits from the back of your card.

The fraudsters sound authentic and professional and give you constant reassurance you are doing the correct cause of action to protect your account.  Fraudsters can spoof telephone numbers so it looks like the number calling you is your bank.

If you receive a call like this from your bank, do not panic, put the telephone down and contact your bank from a trusted source (via the banks telephone number which is on the back of your bank card or call 159).

Never feel embarrassed to put the phone down.  It is ok to call your bank back or visit them at a branch to confirm they are your bank.  Remember it is your money, keep it safe.
