Good afternoon all,
The latest edition of the West Wight Neighbourhood Newsletter is here, reflecting on what the team have been up to throughout November.
Some of you will be aware that Cowes Police station was closed throughout the month due to ongoing maintenance work. However, the PCs and PCSOs based here have still been busy working in the Gurnard, Northwood and Cowes areas, but making use of office space at Newport police station where needed.
Cowes station will be open again soon so the public can attend for appointments and surgeries. Times will be advertised on Facebook and on the Cowes Police Station door.
Issues with vehicles speeding is an Island-wide problem, and is raised to police time and again. As a result, this has been identified as a priority for the team, and the West Wight & Wight Rural South officers and PCSOs have continued to carry out random speeding checks.
Everyone in the West Wight team also took part in the National week of action around knife crime – Operation Sceptre which involved facilitating a knife surrender bin, and working with local schools to educate them on the risks around knife crime including giving input at some of the Island’s secondary schools.
The schools in our area were also provided with resources from the Safe4Me website which, in addition to knife crime, has a wealth of information on topics that can affect young people such as keeping safe online, drug and alcohol use, and maintaining healthy relationships. You can have a look at some of these resources for yourself here: https://www.safe4me.co.uk/resources/
We are continuing our interactions around “Let’s Talk”, which is a feedback tool we use that helps us get to know what matters to you in your local area, and what issues you want us to focus on. We may be knocking on your door to speak to you about this, and we will also be speaking to people about this at some local events and beat surgeries, and generally when we are out and about.
To complete our Let’s Talk survey to tell us what matters to you, visit: https://survey.hampshirealert.co.uk/
You can also get in touch with your Local Bobby to discuss local issues and concerns – simply go online, search your post code, town or street name to find out who your Local Bobby is: https://www.hampshirealert.co.uk/Content/LocalLookup
Please note, contacting your local bobby is not a method to report if you have been a victim or witness to a crime. You will need to report crime by calling 101, using the report tool at www.hampshire.police.uk or by dialling 999 in the event of an emergency or if a crime is in progress.
Newport have appointed a new Shopwatch chairperson and regular meetings will resume in the New Year. By working together we can identify known offenders and share information, and also explore better working practises to report crime.
A witness appeal has been released after three sheep died following a livestock worrying incident in Newport. Sheep were chased by a dog in a field off Worsley Road, and then died as a result of stress. Under the Dogs (Protection of Livestock) Act 1953, it is a criminal offence for a dog to actively worry livestock and dog owners risk prosecution. There has also been a second incident reported in the same area. To read the full appeal and the advice around livestock worrying, visit: https://www.hampshire.police.uk/news/hampshire/news/appeals/2024/november/witness-appeal-after-sheep-killed-in-newport-livestock-worrying-incidents/
CRIME PREVENTION
It’s nearly Christmas, but sadly this can be a draw for opportunistic criminals.
Remember to keep your property and contents safe, particularly over the Festive period. Don’t have presents on view, and ensure doors and windows are locked.
It is worth investing in timer switches for the lights and maybe even a radio so your property appears occupied when you aren’t at home, as a way to deter criminals.
Tell someone you trust that the home will be empty so they can check on your property whilst you’re away if needed, but tell THEM only.
Try and avoid posting on social media to advertise that you are away – consider posting photos and content once you have returned home.
Doorbell cameras are another good investment and have helped police identify people who have not been at an address for legitimate reasons. | ||||
