Four arrested for motorcycle thefts

Last week, as part of Op Ignition, our operation to tackle motorcycle thefts across the city, we arrested two men, both aged 20, and two boys, aged 17 and 15, on suspicion of a number of motorcycle thefts between September and November 2024 in the York area. All four individuals were questioned and have since been released on conditional bail whilst our enquiries continue.

PC Ben Ambler, lead officer for Op Ignition said: “Despite some positive results and reductions in reports of thefts towards the end of the summer, the last few months saw a spike in motorcycle thefts across the city. Our officers have used a range of tactics, including specialist resources, drones and plain-clothes officers to disrupt groups of motorcycle thieves - leading to a 70% reduction in thefts so far in December. We are committed to tackling this issue and will continue to disrupt and apprehend those responsible for this type of crime.”

If you own a motorcycle, remember to follow our advice and keep your vehicle out of sight and to layer your security. These types of thefts tend to occur between late evening and the early hours, with offenders targeting vehicles parked on the street, on driveways or in gardens and attacking the security of the vehicles. Offenders will typically arrive on the scene on bicycles.
