Inspectors Blog - January 2025

Dear Resident

City North Blog

Happy New Year!

I hopefully everyone managed to have a safe and happy festive period.

The local neighbourhood policing priorities for the next 3 months (January to March inclusive) are antisocial behaviour, drug crime, and acquisitive crimes, which include retail crime, burglaries, and vehicle crime.

We’re continuing to effectively tackle these offences across the city north area, which covers Bulwell, Bestwood, Top Valley, Sherwood and Carrington. We cannot do this alone and rely heavily on the community to report suspicious activity and provide intelligence for us to take action against those causing the most harm.

You can do this by calling 101, via our website at www.nottinghamshire.police.uk or in an emergency via 999. You can also pass information anonymously via CrimeStoppers on 0800 555 111.

A change in the shift pattern of the neighbourhood teams across the force has now settled in which will provide greater visibility and availability of officers to deal with the matters affecting the community and concentrate on problem solving the ongoing issues.

Retail crime remains one of the biggest issues and is intrinsically linked to substance misuse. We have recently dealt with two individuals for persistently targeting the Coop on Beckhampton Road and both have been sentenced and issued with a Criminal Behaviour Order requiring them to partake in drug treatment and support – Failure to comply will constitute a further offence for which they will be placed before the courts again.

In December, a significant quantity of drugs, an imitation firearm and two large knives were seized from an address in Top Valley and the occupant arrested and bailed pending forensic analysis of the items.

Only yesterday (8th January), a male was arrested and charged with a commercial burglary whereby he had broken into a pharmacy in the Top Valley area.

In Sherwood / Carrington the team continue to work hard to tackle ASB and persistent begging. This is in conjunction with partners and support services and action is being taken.

We’ve been dedicated to tackling the issues that have been identified by the community, and we’ve seen some really good success rates, with the city north area achieving a 27.7% positive outcome rate for reported offences, which is the best in the force. When I say positive outcomes, I mean when a suspect has been arrested, charged, cautioned, or given restorative justice, so essentially where someone has been sanctioned to prevent further offending, so this rating is very pleasing.

We have seen some really good successes recently but I’m not complacent, and neither are our teams, as we know we need to do more, and we can do more. In order to do so, we need your help. If you see a crime in progress or see suspicious activity, please call us as soon as possible so we can respond appropriately.

Current performance

  • Drug offences have reduced by 4.03% with 10 offences less than the same period last year.
  • Thefts of vehicles have decreased by 16.04% (17 fewer offences)
  • Thefts from vehicles have gone up by 10.09%, which is an increase of 10 offences from the previous year.
  • Burglaries have reduced by 16.13%
  • Shoplifting has reduced by 1.13%, with 21 fewer offences.
  • Robberies have seen a slight reduction of 23.19% with 16 fewer offences.
