#Traitors | Don't worry - no spoilers here!
If you've been watching the latest series from the Scottish castle, you may have spent your evenings shouting at the TV, convinced you’d be a fabulous #Faithful and would be able to tell a #Traitor a mile off.
But would you be quite so capable at spotting a romance fraudster online? 💔
While the BBC’s Traitors is just a game with a fabulous prize, the stakes for falling for a scammer’s lies in real life are far higher.
Here’s just a few tips on signs to spot and how to protect yourself from #RomanceFraud:
👀 Spot the signs:
🔹 The person you’re talking to escalates things quickly, talking of love, marriage or other relationship milestones; 🔹 Your love interest claims to be abroad because they’re in the armed forces or working for a charity; 🔹 They make excuses about why they can’t video call or meet in person; 🔹 They try to encourage you to talk outside of the platform you met on; 🔹 You’re asked for urgent financial help, giving you little time to properly consider their request; 🔹 You’re encouraged to keep the relationship private.
ℹ️ Advice:
🔸 Fall for the person, not the profile; 🔸 Be vigilant. Fraudsters are skilled in what they do – don’t assume only a certain type of person is vulnerable to their scams; 🔸 Check your privacy settings and avoid giving away too many personal details; 🔸 Communicate only on well-regulated sites and apps – don’t be convinced to leave the platform you met on until you’ve met the person and trust they’re genuine; 🔸 Stop to think before parting with any money or sharing personal information which could allow access to your finances. 🔸 Report suspicious accounts to the platform provider – helping to protect yourself and others. 🔸 Never suffer in silence. If you think you’re a victim of #RomanceFraud, report it to police and Action Fraud |
