Residents Beware - Rogue traders, reassurance & advice.

Good Afternoon, Residents of Narborough, Enderby, Littlethorpe & New Lubbesthorpe,

We have recently seen an increase of reports from victims who have been approached by rogue traders, whether that be trying to impersonate another business, or claim to specialize in a particular line of work. These workers have been known to approach houses and claim they work for the council and then go on to show false/illegitimate documents of identification. I just wanted to get in touch with you all to reassure that this is something we will be looking at and so will be the council as they are the most appropriate agency for this matter.

If you believe you've fallen victim to a rogue trader, here’s some important advice to help protect yourself and take appropriate action:

1. Do Not Pay Upfront

  • Avoid paying the full amount upfront, especially in cash. Rogue traders often ask for large sums in advance and then fail to carry out the work or leave it unfinished.
  • 2. Ask for Written Details

  • Request a written estimate or contract before any work begins. This should include clear details of the work to be done, the cost, and timescales. If they refuse, this could be a warning sign.
  • 3. Get Multiple Quotes

  • Always get at least two or three quotes from reputable traders or companies before committing. This will help you gauge the average cost of the work.
  • 4. Check Credentials

  • Verify the trader’s qualifications, membership in trade associations, and insurance. For example, check if they are registered with government-backed schemes.
  • 5. Don’t Feel Pressured

  • Rogue traders may pressure you into making quick decisions. Take your time to consider the offer, and don't let anyone rush you into agreeing to work on the spot.
  • 6. Trust Your Instincts

  • If something feels off, or if you sense pressure or aggressive tactics, trust your instincts and walk away. Rogue traders often use high-pressure sales tactics to make you feel uncomfortable or intimidated.
  • 7. Seek a Second Opinion

  • If the trader claims you need expensive work, get a second opinion from another professional or independent expert. They may advise you that the work isn't necessary or quote a fairer price.
  • 8. Document Everything

  • Keep records of all communications, quotes, invoices, and payments. If the situation escalates or you need to report the incident, this documentation will be vital. Make note of any vehicles they may be using and any signage they may be advertising on their vehicle including telephone numbers, email addresses etc.
  • 9. Report the Incident

  • If you believe you've been scammed or the work is substandard, report the rogue trader to Trading Standards. In some cases, you may also wish to contact Leicestershire Police if fraud is suspected.
  • 10. Know Your Consumer Rights

  • You are entitled to protection under consumer laws, which safeguard against misleading practices, shoddy workmanship, and fraud. If you’re not satisfied with the work, you may be entitled to a refund or to have the work rectified.
  • By staying vigilant and following these steps, you can protect yourself from falling victim to rogue traders and help ensure that any work carried out at your property is fair and legitimate.

In the meantime, I hope you are all well, had a lovely Christmas and New Year and hope to see some of you at our upcoming Beat Surgeries. Our next one is 16/01/2025 which is being held and Enderby Leisure Centre between 11:00 - 12:00.

    Take care,

    PCSO 6592 Danny Yeatman
