Fraud & Advice

Good afternoon

Enclosed are five useful advice tips on how to beat the fraudsters :

“Take Five” take five is a national campaign that offers straightforward and impartial advice to help everyone to protect themselves from preventable financial fraud.

I will highlight how important it is to take a moment if you receive a phone call or email asking you to hand over personal or financial information, because as the campaign advises we all know deep down to take a deep breath and try and stay calm.

Never disclose security details, such as banking details, pin numbers or passwords.  Banks will never ask you for any of these via an email, by phone, text message or in writing.  Before you share anything with anyone STOP. Then pause to consider what you're being asked for and question why they need it. Unless you are 100% sure of who you are talking to, don't disclose any personal or financial details.

Never assume a phone call or an email is authentic. Just because someone knows your basic details, does not mean they are genuine.

Don't be rushed or pressured into making a decision - remember to STOP and take your time to carefully consider your actions. A bank or trusted organisation won't rush you or mind waiting if you want time to think.

Listen to your instincts - If something feels wrong, then it usually is. Question what is being requested & ask for an explanation. Fraudsters may lull you into a false sense of security.  They may appear trustworthy, but they may not be who they claim to be.

Stay in control - have the confidence to refuse unusual requests. It's ok to stop the discussion if you do not feel in control of it - this includes replacing the receiver & ending the call.  Always try to wait at least five minutes before making a further call to a friend to ask advice as fraudsters have been known to keep open a phone line - or if possible use another phone.

If you believe you have been a victim of fraud please report it to Action Fraud on 03001232040 or at actionfraud.police.uk

Thank you
