We have seen a recent increase in the number of e-scooters being used around Gargrave. It is illegal to use an e-scooter on public pavements or roads. They are legally classed as motor vehicles which means you are required to have a driving licence, insurance and tax to ride them on a public highway. It's not currently possible to get insurance for privately owned e-scooters, which means it's illegal to use them on the road or in public spaces. The penalties include a fixed penalty notice, a fine of up to £300, up to six penalty points and seizure of the e-scooter. Also, if you allow a juvenile to ride an e-scooter on a public pavement or road, you too can be prosecuted for permitting the use of that motor vehicle. This could result in a fine and penalty points on your licence. In Craven, the only place you can legally use an e-scooter is on private land, with the permission of the land owner. If you cause serious harm to another person whilst riding an e-scooter the incident will be investigated in the same way it would if you were riding a motorcycle or driving a car. If you're using an e-scooter in public in an antisocial manner, you can also risk the e-scooter being seized under section 59 of the Police Reform Act. | ||||
