Hajj Fraud Warning

Dear subscriber,

The City of London Police is warning prospective Hajj pilgrims to be vigilant against fraud as they begin booking trips to Makkah for summer 2025.

Thousands of British Muslims are expected to book their once-in-a-lifetime pilgrimage, but in previous years, victims have lost thousands of pounds and their chance to fulfil this sacred duty.

UK-based organised crime groups target people planning Hajj or Umrah trips. The extent of Hajj-related fraud is believed to be significantly higher than reported, as many victims may feel too embarrassed or frightened to come forward. Fraudulent tactics may include fake websites posing as the official booking site or agents insisting on managing bookings and payments outside of the official Nusuk platform.

Guidance for prospective pilgrims on how to avoid Hajj-related fraud:

  • Pilgrims travelling from the UK must use the official Nusuk platform to book their Hajj. Do not make Hajj arrangements or payments to any travel agents operating outside of the official Nusuk platform.

  • Research the Hajj services provider before you complete your booking. Use consumer websites, or reviews from people (or organisations) that you trust.
  •

  • Be aware that Hajj packages are not ATOL protected. Seek advice from your Hajj services provider on how this may affect your pilgrimage.
  •

  • Retain all receipts and details of your payments. Follow the advice on the Nusuk portal regarding how and when to make payments.
  •
