Good morning all,
E-scooters have been around for a few years now and Leicestershire Police have taken a largely educational approach to dealing with their use. They are however, classed as a motorised vehicle and as such they cannot be ridden on the public roads without the relevant insurance or documents. They can only be legally ridden on private land where the owner has given their permission.
If you are seen riding an e-scooter in a public place, whether it be on the road or pavement it is liable to be seized under section 165 of the Road Traffic Act 1988.
Whilst it may be a fun present for youngsters or a convenient way to nip around the villages, please don't fall foul of the law and make sure they are only ridden on private land. The only legal way to use an e-scooter on public roads is by hiring one from an approved council scheme.
If you were to have an accident on an e-scooter and hurt somebody it would be investigated in the same way as if you had hit somebody with a car. Even if you do not ride an e-scooter but have friends or family who do I would urge you to please make them aware of this important message.
Regards
Russ PC 1389 Leech
