Advice - External Lighting

Dear Resident,

Appropriate external lighting around your home is a major factor in deterring crime

Good light coverage illuminates anyone nearby, allowing them to be seen more easily by those inside the property, CCTV, or people passing by.

Please read the main points to consider below -

  • We recommend using dusk till dawn lighting around the outside of your property, when on it will give a constant white glow.
  • You could consider a PIR sensor, but these can be activated by animals, and can cause alarm if they suddenly turn on.
  • Ensure that entrances are covered by lighting.
  • Make sure lights are not covered by trees or plants.
  • Fix lighting where it is difficult to be tampered with.
  • Consider how your lighting and CCTV are set up, too much light near a camera may affect the footage.
  • Consider where you are putting lights, so they don't annoy your neighbours.
  •

Please also find attached the Police Crime Prevention Handbook which covers a broad range of crime prevention advice.

    Regards
