Beggar Arrested in Halliwell

Good Afternoon,

This morning, PC Lupton and PC Thomas have responded to a number of reports of a male begging at the junction of St Georges Road in Bolton. It had been reported that the male was becoming aggressive to members of the public and began to spit at cars.

Officers located the male who was arrested on suspicion of Begging under Section 3 Vagrancy Act 1824. The 55-year-old male who was already known to the Police for begging, was taken into custody where he was later charged and bailed to attend court at a later date.

In response to concerns from the community in relation to begging, GMP launched Op Yetminster, an operation to tackle begging in Bolton. The aim of the operation is to engage with people who are begging and ensure they are sign posted to appropriate support agencies. Prior to being prosecuted, GMP constables and Police community support officers issue verbal warnings and the use of Community Protection Warnings.

You can report any incidents of this nature via Crimestoppers, 101 or online using the below link. Always call 999 in the case of an emergency.
