Fraud - Rogue Traders

We have recently had reports of rogue traders operating in the area. Please find some advice below to assist if yourself or your neighbours are approached :

How to Spot Rogue Traders:

They cold call at your door offering services such as driveway work, roofing, or gardening.

They often claim work is urgent or spotted issues with your property.

They offer cheap deals or discounts if you agree immediately.

They may be reluctant to give paperwork such as receipts, contracts, or invoices.

Their contact details may be vague or missing (e.g., no business address).

Crime Prevention Advice:

Do not agree to work on the spot. Always get multiple quotes from reputable businesses.

Use recommended traders. Check reviews or use trusted websites such as TrustMark, or Trading Standards' Buy With Confidence scheme.

Verify their identity. Ask for ID and business credentials—genuine traders will have no problem showing this.

Never pay upfront. Rogue traders often demand cash payments before work is completed.

Do not be pressured. Take your time to decide and consult family or friends.

Use a door chain. If an unknown trader knocks, keep your door secure and talk through a chain or letterbox.

Report suspicious activity. Call 101 to report concerns to the police or Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline (0808 223 1133) for trading standards advice.

If a trader refuses to leave or becomes aggressive, call 999 immediately.
