Garage security, protect your possessions!

Good afternoon,

This afternoon we were making some house-to-house enquiries in Chatham. One of the residents complained about drug users getting into her garage and using it as a place to take drugs. We discussed security and I said that I would make some recommendations. I thought that everyone might be able to benefit from my recommendations, so I am sharing them now.

  • If your garage is connected to the home and you have an internal door connecting your home and garage, then care needs to be taken over the type of internal door fitted. Security needs to be of the same standard that you would have for an external door. (Please check my previous post about lock snapping)

  • Fitting a garage door defender to prevent the door being lifted is a good and visible way to let potential burglars or trespassers know that your serious about your security.

  • Further bolts can be added to the sides of your garage door to make it even less appealing for potential burglars or trespassers.

  • Motion flood lighting or “dawn to dusk” lighting can be an effective deterrent.

  • CCTV inside and outside of the garage can also be an effective deterrent especially if it saves to a remote hard drive meaning that damaging the camera will have no effect on the footage.

  • Alarms, if you are lucky enough to have an alarm system in your house then attach it to the garage as well, if not then get yourself a budget alarm and attach it to the garage door to make a loud noise if the garage door is opened by anyone not knowing it is there.
  • Also consider reviewing your home insurance documents. Some insurance companies will not pay out if your insurance is not up to date and if your garage security is substandard.

Any security items that you get should be tested and certified, to understand the difference between certified products and non-certified products please follow this link.

Finally – and this is so important to remember – if you find someone in your garage and if you’re threatened with violence, don’t risk your personal safety. Property can be replaced, you can’t. get to a safe place and dial 999.
