The Nedge Safer Neighbourhood Team want to remind parents and their children of the importance of road safety. Road safety for children is crucial to prevent accidents and ensure their well- being. Generally, children are not ready to cross the road on their own until they are at least eight years old. When the time comes to teach your child about crossing the road, please remember some of the following: Pedestrian crossings should be safe, however, they can still be dangerous if children don't take care. Sadly, we also occasionally see drivers that simply do not stop.
For Children 1. Use Pedestrian Crossings – Always cross at zebra crossings, traffic signals, or pedestrian bridges. 2. Look Both Ways – Before crossing, look left, right, and left again to check for vehicles. 3. Walk, Don’t Run – Running across the road increases the risk of tripping or not noticing oncoming traffic. 4. Stay on the Pavement – Walk on the pavement and avoid stepping onto the road. 5. Be Visible – Wear bright or reflective clothing, especially at night. 6. No Distractions – Avoid using phones, headphones, or playing near roads.
For Parents & Guardians 1. Teach by Example – Follow road rules to set a good example for children. 2. Hold Hands – Young children should hold an adult’s hand when crossing the road. 3. Use Safe Routes – Choose roads with proper pedestrian paths and traffic lights. 4. Teach Traffic Signals – Explain the meaning of red, yellow, and green signals. 5. Encourage Safe Cycling – Ensure kids wear helmets and follow bike lane rules.
For Drivers 1. Slow Down Near Schools & Parks – Drive cautiously in areas where children are likely to be. 2. Watch for Sudden Movements – Kids may unexpectedly run into the road. 3. Follow School Bus Rules – Stop when children are getting on or off the bus. 4. Avoid Distractions – No texting or using a phone while driving in child-populated areas. During the times when children are going to and from school, many schools have a maximum speed limit of 20mph. Please adhere to this and be a courteous and considerate driver.
