Community Engagement

So this week PCSO's Hillman and Coupland attended St Josephs Catholic Academy School On Thursday afternoon to deliver an input about Honesty and Integrity, what they mean and the importance of each.

They talked through a scenario involving six separate characters, who all had a different part to play within the story.

The scenario was in relation to a theft which had taken place in a shop, and how each individual within the story had made different choices both right and wrong decisions. We then discussed the impacts that those choices can have on everyone involved within the scenario and how they can have detrimental effects on the individual making wrong choices, their families, the business who become victims of theft, the employees of those businesses and the families of all involved.

From the discussions around right and wrong choices, we then explained to the children how honesty and integrity fits into a scenario or situation such as this one.

We then also discussed how honesty and integrity fits into everything that the Police have to do.

We then gave the children a fun activity where they have created their own poems using the word honesty as an acronym.

Some of these poems were absolutely brilliant and we will be giving out prizes to the individuals who engaged really well throughout the entire session and for those with the best poems!

PCSO Hillman has then attended St Josephs again on Friday, however on this occasion had the pleasure of being accompanied by one of Matlock's Rural Crime Officers, PCSO Spencer Nixon.

PCSO Nixon had explained to the children what Rural Crime is and what their team do within the Policing world.

He also took some items along with him that have been seized from Rural crime incidents, such as an elephants foot that had been hollowed out and used as a bar stool. He then explained to the children why any items involving Elephants are illegal such as Ivory from Elephants tusks. He also took a small baby crocodile that had been hollowed out and treated and a snakes skin and also explained a little bit about the importation of exotic animals and how their team works alongside a large variety of agencies and organisations to prevent this sort of thing from happening and protect endangered species.

He also gave the children an opportunity to took/feel some of these seized artifacts.

A Crayfish net was also shown to the children and explained to them what it is used for and why, and why it is also illegal.

Please see the photos below.

The children then had a short questions and answers session before being taken into the playground and given the opportunity to get inside of one of the Rural crime teams trucks. PCSO Nixon then went through some of the items that are kept inside his vehicle when responding to incidents, as some of the equipment is slightly different to that used by the Safer Neighbourhood Team and Local Response Team.

Regular foot patrols have also been conducted as normal to ensure the community can see their local officers and raise any concerns they may have.

We hope you all have a wonderful and safe weekend in the sunshine and enjoy it as much as possible.

Kind regards,

PCSO 12953 Annellei Hillman.
