With the hot weather, we have seen an increased number of fires across moorland. It's great that we have had some amazing sunshine over the last few weeks, but with this weather our moorlands across Devon and Cornwall have become very dry and are at a higher risk of potentially devastating fires.
Devon and Cornwall Police in conjunction with our partners in the Fire Service are urging our communities-
Act responsibly as landowners to mitigate wider risks of fire spreading. Think of the potential impacts to the environment and wildlife around us, particularly at this time of year and with the prolonged dry weather. Think of the impact on already stretched resources and all the avoidable call outs to incidents of this nature. Give consideration to the potential damage and fire spread to neighbouring properties and the potential dangers of risk to property and to life. The impact of fire spreading across moorland not only puts wildlife and habitats at risk, but also risks human safety and the safety of buildings and homes across the moors. If you see a fire which seems out of control, or see someone starting a fire which concerns you- CALL 999 and ask for fire service. If you can, use mobile software such as What3Words to pinpoint the location of the fire so Fire Service and Police can locate the incident and contain it quickly and effectively whilst protecting community safety.
