Something Different!

You never know what you might learn on the job! 🚒🤝👮‍♀️ Our local SNT officers had a valuable learning experience this week down at the River Gardens. While the fantastic Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service team were practicing their vital water rescue skills, they kindly took the time to teach our officers how to perform throwline rescues.

This fantastic collaboration reinforces a critical message we want to share with our community: please be extremely careful near rivers and waterways. The dangers can be hidden and unforgiving.

Here are a few important reminders from Derbyshire Fire and Rescue to help you stay safe:

- Strong, unpredictable currents and undertows (stoppers/hydraulic jumps) in weirs can trap swimmers.

-Cold water shock in rivers can be extremely dangerous, causing involuntary reactions.

-Hidden submerged structures and debris in rivers can cause serious injury.

-Water flow in rivers and at weirs can change rapidly and become dangerous without warning.

-Never swim near weirs or locks.

-Stick to designated and supervised swimming areas if you choose to swim in open water.

- Be aware of and always obey warning signs around water.

- Never jump or dive into rivers or unknown waters – you don't know what's below the surface.

- Swim with a buddy and let someone on land know where you are.

- If you see someone in trouble, DO NOT attempt a rescue yourself. Call 999 immediately and ask for the Fire and Rescue Service.
