Afternoon everyone.
I hope you are all having a eggcellent day!!
Today in Stockport, Greater Manchester the sun is out, there are lots of places to visit and people to see on my targeted foot patrol around our town.
My first stop takes me to Bridgefield Street which is where I find the Redrock entertainment complex. This building opened its doors to the public in 2017 and is part of our £1Bn regeneration area. Here you will find ten cinema screens showing the latest blockbuster films, ten bowling alleys and an arcade, home also to several restaurants and a national gym, there is plenty to do here with family or friends.
The Redrock was famously awarded the winner of the 2018 Carbuncle award which described its architecture as being a garish and a soul-less leisure shed. I suppose the architecture is not everyone’s cup of tea but it’s ours and we love it. I spoke to the security team at the site today who had no issues to report, I was happy to see that the team here are using the Store-net radio which is a direct link to their police team down in the town centre.
Onto the Interchange, Stockport's new bus station.
With a limited service today, footfall on the town was not as high as usual, however there were still plenty of families out today going to events and completing easter egg hunts.
No issues to report today during my visit.
My foot patrol then took me to the Plaza steps which were opened in August 1929, an iconic part of Stockport Town centre The steps were cleaned and brought back to its dazzling best earlier this year.
The clean up was funded by our very own BID team “Totally Stockport” and included the replacing of the lighting at the site which was funded for and completed by Stockport Council.
Of interest, the immediate area that includes The Plaza and Merseyway was also used in 2019 by the BBC to record several scenes for the award winning “Peaky Blinders”
I spoke to several young people at this location today who were out enjoying the day, nothing to report.
Walking up the steps towards St Petersgate, I found myself at Grand Central Library which is a Carnegie building, around 2509 Carnegie libraries were built in the UK between 1883 and 1929
Our very own library which is still the largest in the borough was built in 1913 and still serves the people of Stockport today, in my day and before the invention of Google this is where we had to go to look up information to complete school projects!
The buiding was closed today however I managed to walk around its perimieter and check for any insecurties, happy to report there were none during todays visit.
Up to Mcdonalds on Wellington Road South, This site has been serving fast food to the public since 1991 and was part of the original Grand Central which has partially been knocked down and re-developed over the years.
Plenty of burgers and fries being served up today and a report of a fish being battered, but nothing serious!
Over to the Market place, which is the site of the old Stockport Castle…….yes! we had a castle! who knew! in 1770 what remained of the castle was levelled to make way for a mill.
The area is awash with taverns and restaurants, today I checked on the Bakers Vault which was owned by Charles Baker, a successful business man and a twice mayor of Stockport.
It's Starting to get busy now, lots of people out and about enjoying the refreshments on offer. Happy to report no issues ongoing at this location.
Down to the old Sainsbury's store which closed for the final time in 2021. This site is earmarked for regeneration, Amstone Developments has purchased the site from Sainsbury's and plans to build three residential blocks with 563 apartments. It will be known as No1 Knightsbridge
I have been called to a report of ASB involving young males messing around the broken windows of this disused buiding, I have spoken to four youths here and sent them on their way, details obtained and a visit to parents planned in the coming days.
And finally over to Little Egerton Street to a report of males hanging around the cycle hub. This location provides secure storage for those who rely on pedal power to get about.
The Cycle hub is part of the BEE NETWORK and is desribed by TFGM as a safe and secure place to lock your bike up under cover away from potential thieves. The site is covered by state of the art CCTV who's staff use our Store-Net radio to contact the police team. No males seen at this location, further passing attention throughout the day and CCTV operators advised to monitor.
Thats all for todays targetted foot patrol, more to come in the following days, over six miles covered today, lots of engagement with my community. Have a peaceful Easter Sunday everyone and in the words of the great Ron Burgundy “ you stay classy Stockport”
