Slough Centre Nursery School, a maintained nursery based in Buckingham Avenue East, have been awarded three awards for promoting active movement and supporting sustainable travel. The awards won were Modeshift STARS Local Authority Early Years Establishment of the Year Award 24/25, Regional Early Years Establishment of the Year Award 24/25, and National Early Years Establishment of the Year Award 24/25. To achieve these awards the staff, parents and children have been taking part in different initiatives to promote sustainable travel by walking, cycling, and scooting to school, as well as park and stride and car sharing. The nursery promotes active movements by inviting parents and carers into the nursery setting to take part in active activities such as parachute games, ring games, active start, gymnastic sessions, and games such as Hide and Seek and What’s the time Mr. Wolf? Since 2021, Slough Borough Council’s Places & Community Team have been engaging with Slough schools on Modeshift STARS and Active Travel activities. Modeshift STARS is an online application that provides a comprehensive Travel Plan tool that assists schools in: Aisha Lateef, Headteacher, Slough Centre Nursery School, said: “We are very lucky to have a large outdoor area that we can use all year round in all weather conditions. We provide resources and opportunities for the children to take risks and learn new skills such as using pedals on the bikes, climbing ladders and balancing, this will help them gain skills for an active and healthier lifestyle. “We also took steps to tackle parking and congestion issues around the nursery by introducing a Parking Pledge with the parents and by encouraging them to park at the local leisure centre so they can park and walk safely with their children. We also taught the children about Road Safety and took part in the campaign Be Bright, Be Seen. We are very grateful for the support from the parents and Miss Kellie Carroll to help us achieve these awards and for supporting us on our Modeshift STARS journey.” Councillor Puja Bedi, Lead Member for Education and Children’s Services said: “Congratulations to all staff, children, and parents/carers at Slough Centre Nursery for working so hard to achieve not one, not two, but three Modeshift STARS awards for promoting sustainable travel and active movement. The staff have been innovative in how they achieve this with park and stride and car sharing, to parachute games and gymnastic sessions. This is fantastic to see and so important for our youngest residents.” Find out more about Modeshift Stars and Active Travel | ||||
