PROTECT YOUR BIKE FROM THEFT

If you’ve ever had your bicycle stolen, you’ll know how upsetting it can be.

The most important thing to remember is, double lock your bike and register the frame number.

Follow these tips to ensure your bike remains safe, secure and not a statistic.

  • Consider using a floor or wall-mounted anchor lock for extra security.
  • Installing an alarm (shed alarm) can be a strong deterrent for thieves.
  • Take clear photographs of your bike, including any distinctive marks or features.
  • Regularly check platforms like Ebay, Gumtree, and Facebook Marketplace to see if your bike is being sold. You can also set up alerts for bikes that match your description, as sometimes bikes are broken up and sold in parts.
  • Share the news of your stolen bike on social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.
  • Ensure your bike is insured. If you've invested significantly in your bike, it's important to be covered for theft. Consider specialist cycle insurance, as home insurance policies may have a value limit for bikes.
  • GPS trackers are available in various forms, which can help you track your bike if stolen. There are two main types:
    • Bluetooth-based trackers: Smaller, cheaper, and don't require a subscription. Examples include Apple's AirTags.
    • Full GPS trackers: These offer worldwide location tracking but usually require a subscription and tend to be larger and more expensive.
  • Register your frame number on a national bike registration database approved by Secured by Design. The frame number is usually found underneath the bike between the pedals or where the back wheel slots in. If your bike is ever stolen and recovered by the police, it can be traced back to you.
  • Get your bike security marked. It’s a highly effective, visible deterrent to bike thieves. They know that if they are caught with a registered bike, the owner can be traced and they will be arrested. Security marking products can be found at Secured by Design.
  • If your bike has been stolen, contact us as soon as possible by reporting immediately. Give us your frame number, cycle database number, a photo and any other details and make sure you update the status on the cycle database where you registered it. The sooner we know, the sooner we can act, which might stop it being sold on.
  • It is also worth posting a description and photo of your missing bike on the following forums:

  • Ride.cc Bike Forum
  • Bikeradar
  • CycleChat
  • London Fixed Gear and Single-Speed is a forum specific to the capital. It would also be worth adding a description and photo of your missing bike here.
