I wanted to provide you with an update regarding Road Safety, which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey. Gipton and Harehills Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) continue to use all available powers and legislation to tackle and disrupt organised crime, illegal activities, anti-social behaviour, and roads related offences that cause harm to communities in Harehills, Leeds as part of CommUnity Harehills.
On Monday 23rd June 2025, during Neighbourhood Policing Awareness Week, officers from the Inner East Neighbourhoods Policing Team conducted a multi-agency traffic operation in partnership with the Driving Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and Leeds City Council Serious Environmental Crime Team.
Multiple vehicles were directed to a check point during the operation in Harehills, where vehicles were inspected which resulted in the following:
• One commercial vehicle was immediately prohibited by the DVSA, due to being in a dangerous state. • Several motorists were issued with delayed prohibitions, which provides a time frame for the faults identified to be rectified. • One motorist was issued with a £200 fine, after their vehicle was found to be 15% over its gross weight. • One motorist was summonsed to court, after their vehicle was found to be 26% over its gross weight. • One vehicle was seized for no insurance and the driver reported to the courts. • One motorist was issued with a £100 fine and three points on their licence for tyre offences. • One motorist carrying waste without a waste carriers’ licence, was required to purchase the relevant licence at the time of the stop. • Several motorists were issued with vehicle defect rectification forms, for minor faults. • The DWP gathered information during the operation, in respect of drivers and vehicle occupants with a view to conducting further enquiries. • A total of eleven vehicles were seized by the DVLA, for no road tax.
Acting Sergeant Greenwood, lead for Gipton and Harehills Neighbourhood Policing Team said:
“ Protecting our communities and ensuring roads are safe is a priority, and we continue to address community concerns raised across the ward.
“ As part of our continued approach to eradicate the risks of harm, serious injury or death on the roads, we will continue to work collaboratively with partners to ensure other road users, pedestrians and cyclists are kept safe.
“ I would like to take this opportunity to thank all operational units, and partner agencies involved in the recent successful road safety operation held and hope the actions taken provides reassurance to communities that action will be taken to address concerns raised.”
