Fake notes/cash

Hi Resident

There has been a recent incident where a counterfeit £50 note was used to purchase products in a supermarket. If you are a business owner or work in a store or anywhere that handles cash, check the notes thoroughly.

Sometimes counterfeit notes are so easy to tell apart from real ones as they have a different feel or the colours are slightly off, and other times it is harder to tell them apart because they are well made.

If you are unsure, here are some tips on how to check bank notes-

  • Bank notes will have their own unique serial number, so if you see two bank notes with the same serial number, one of them will not be genuine
  • Fake notes usually tend to be limp ad not hold shape whereas real notes will feel crisp and not like normal paper.
  • A real note will show a hologram where the colour and the image will change when the angle changes
  • Use a detector pen. They work so that when used, the pen will leave a dark line on counterfeit notes. The pen will have no effect on genuine notes.
  • Use a UV light on a genuine note and there will be special UV features present on the note that will be highlighted yellow.
  • If you do come into contact with a counterfeit note, please do not try and re-use it or pass it onto anyone else. Instead, report it to the police or if you feel like it is a scam, report it to Action Fraud.

    Thank you
