I wanted to provide you with an update regarding cycle theft, which some members around this area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey. Longlands SNT have effectively returned a stolen bike to its owner after the bike was taken and placed on Facebook market place. A male and female where instructed by the market place owner to meet the victim and take his money for his own bike. Police intervened and was able to ascertain the bike belonged to the victim through bikeregister.com. The bike also had a unique UV marking the bike register associates with the victims account.
Inquiries are still ongoing but a good result none the less.
Longlands team advice on keeping your bicycle secure!
I would advise 3 locks on the bike as a minimum to put a thief off. One on the front, one on the back wheel and one securing the frame to a solid object or bicycle rack. Don't cheap out on cheap locks as that could be the difference between you keeping your bike or not. Look out for sold secure and secure by design as they are tested to destruction and given a measure of toughness like gold and diamond. Diamond being the toughest.
We would recommend signing up to this link being https://www.bikeregister.com/ Police will be able to see your bike and who it belongs to. You can also get a UV kit with a stencil unique to your profile and bike so we can tell who the bike belongs to. Make sure you add the frame number to the website. This is normally found on the underside of the bike.
Take your battery out! If you have an electric bike most electric bikes have a hub that is hard to pedal with no power. Again this might deter a thief.
Be mindful where you leave your bike. Its a good idea to leave it secured covered by CCTV and good lighting.
These are some useful sites to check too . You can post a picture and description of your bike if it does get stolen.
