Talking Wildlife Training

Colleagues from across Nottinghamshire have taken part in additional Training to bolster their response to Wildlife Crime.

On Thursday (20th November), our colleagues teamed up with the Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust RSPCA (England & Wales), RSPB and Naturewatch Foundation in a hands‑on session at the Attenborough Nature Reserve

Response Colleagues, Neighbourhood Policing Officers and Control Room Officers from Nottinghamshire Police all came together to enhance their knowledge on wildlife crime – from deer poaching and hare coursing, to the trading in endangered species and legislation surrounding wild birds.

The training explored real‑life cases, successful prosecutions, and the devastating impact these crimes can have on local wildlife.

The event builds on our commitment to enhancing rural engagement, following the launch of initiatives such as the volunteer-led scheme Rural Watch and dedicated rural beat surgeries.

Police control room staff have also undergone training to help them understand rural crime better.

Juliet Webber, the Nottinghamshire Police Rural and Wildlife Crime Partnerships Manager, said: 

“This gave our officers the perfect opportunity to network with colleagues across the county, learn from those with differing experience, and make important contacts to support their wildlife crime or welfare investigations.

“Our wildlife crime officers are based countywide - including in the city - ensuring we have coverage wherever it’s needed.

“Wildlife crime not only threatens protected species, but it is often linked to wider organised crime, and we are dedicated to protecting our rural communities.

“We’re listening to farmers, residents, and conservation partners to tackle the issues that matter most.

“I’d also like to take this time to thank our partners that hosted the sessions. These events wouldn’t happen without their support, and it demonstrates just how important partnership working is.”
