Cash Machine Distraction Theft |
Dear Valley Ward Members,
Be aware of ATM distraction theft where criminals create a diversion to steal your cash or card, often by bumping into you or asking a question. To protect yourself, be aware of your surroundings, cover your PIN, and ignore distractions. If your card gets stuck, do not leave without it; immediately contact your bank to freeze the account. Prevention and protection Be aware of your surroundings: Check for anyone standing too close or acting suspiciously near the ATM. If you feel uneasy, cancel the transaction and leave. Cover your PIN: Always use your other hand or body to shield the keypad when entering your PIN. Do not get distracted: Ignore anyone who tries to distract you, such as by tapping your shoulder or asking a question. Don't be afraid to ignore them and focus on your transaction. Secure your card and cash: Put your card and cash away immediately after the transaction is complete. Use contactless payments: When possible, use contactless cards or mobile payments, which are often quicker and safer. Check the machine: Before using an ATM, look for any signs of tampering, such as a loose-looking card slot or a device attached to the keypad. If you see anything suspicious, do not use it and call the bank or 101. Activate transaction alerts: Set up alerts with your bank so you are notified immediately of any unauthorized transactions. If you are a victim Card stuck in machine: If your card gets stuck, do not leave the machine without it. Immediately contact your bank to freeze your account and arrange for a replacement. If you are robbed: Report the incident to the police as soon as possible by calling 101 or using the online reporting tool on the Met Police website. Report fraud: For fraud and cybercrime, you can report it to Action Fraud. | ||
