Cold callers - selling items |
We have had reports today of people going door to door in residential areas selling household items and cleaning products in Bovey Tracey. The seller involved has been able trying to enter a property asking for a glass of water, and after leaving was heard also asking asking a neighbour for a glass of water. Although no offences have been disclosed, it is worrying that this person has tried to get into a property and we believe managed to get into another. This would be particularly worrying had he gained access to a vulnerable persons property. The male has shown a laminated form saying he was working on a rehabilitation scheme. He has told residents that he was on probation and had been dropped into the area by his probation officer.
We would like to remind residents to remain vigilant when dealing with cold callers. If someone calls at your door wishing to sell something or promote a business or charity, you are under no obligation to buy or to even open the door and you should never invite someone selling or collecting door to door into your house. Anyone selling door to door should have a licence, which is not just a badge with or without photo. If you have cold callers refusing to leave when asked, or you feel pressurised to purchase goods, the police should be called on 999 if necessary. If you see something suspicious, you are not happy about someone you have seen in your area, or you are concerned for a neighbour then please call us on 101 or make contact via the Devon & Cornwall police website. Use 999 if urgent or you think a crime is being committed.
