Vehicle criminal damage scam- Gorleston

If you're thinking about selling your vehicle privately, please be vigilant of fraudsters, after an incident was reported to us at the weekend which involved three men arranging to visit a property on Oriel Avenue, Gorleston, posing as buyers of a car for sale. While inspecting the car, they claimed the coolant had oil in it and asked for a discount, which the owner refused. The men left shortly after.

When the owner later reviewed his CCTV, he noticed one of the men had poured oil in the coolant himself whilst the other two had distracted him.

Officers would like to remind people to:

Supervise any potential buyer closely during a viewing, to ensure they cannot tamper with the vehicle. Do not leave the vehicle alone with the buyers at any point.

Always accompany the buyer on a test drive, keeping hold of the keyless fob if there is one.

Keep hold of the vehicle, the keys and all the documents until the full payment has been checked.

Call us if you are being threatened and be confident to refuse the sale if you’re doubtful.
