I wanted to provide you with an update regarding Theft - (shoplifting, personal, other), which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey. A man has been sentenced for shoplifting and stealing a bike in Fleet.
Paul Cook, 38, of New Barn Close, Fleet, stole cleaning items and food worth £105 from Sainsbury’s on 2 October. He then stole a bike worth £520 on Fleet Road on 17 October.
Cook was identified and arrested after officers used UKPAC, an app launched by UK Partners Against Crime, for the first time in Fleet.
The UKPAC app gives shop owners and their staff an opportunity to log crimes and upload CCTV or pictures, without needing to call 101 each time.
Thanks to this, Cook was arrested and charged with theft from a shop and theft of a pedal cycle and was convicted at Basingstoke Magistrates Court.
On 17 December, he was sentenced to a community order – a curfew which forces him to wear an electronic tag and to be at his home address between 7pm and 7am until 17 February 2026. He must also pay compensation of £105.
Hart Police Sergeant Geoff Hill said: “Paul Cook is a prolific offender in the town centre. This was the first time we used UKPAC in Fleet, and I’m pleased to say it was a success as we were able to achieve a positive outcome.
“We take all reports of bike thefts and shoplifting extremely and we will do all we can to ensure offenders and caught and put before the courts.”
