On Friday, we received multiple reports of a 40‑tonne articulated lorry travelling up Winnats Pass, Castleton and subsequently becoming stuck, causing significant disruption and blocking the road. By the time response officers arrived, the vehicle had already left the scene. The driver has since been issued with a Notice of Intended Prosecution, which will result in a fine for breaching the weight restriction.
We the local Safer Neighbourhood Team continues to monitor Winnats Pass and the A57 Snake Pass where possible, enforcing the existing weight restrictions. This includes reporting drivers who use restricted routes or stopping HGVs prior to entry and turning them around to prevent further incidents.
We urge members of the public to report any sightings of HGVs travelling on roads subject to the 7.5‑tonne weight restriction. Reports can be made via the Derbyshire Police website or by calling the non‑emergency number 101. When reporting, it is essential that we receive the vehicle registration number, as we are unable to take action without it. Please also provide the date, time, location, a basic description of the vehicle, and dashcam footage if available
