Never leave your car unattended while the engine is running. It only takes a few seconds for an opportunist thief to jump in and drive away. This also applies if you are using a spare key to lock the car while the engine runs, as a thief can simply smash a window.

Stay with your vehicle. Wrap up warm and remain with your car the entire time it is de-icing.

Use manual methods. Use a de-icer spray and a scraper to speed up the process rather than relying on the engine and heater alone.

Plan ahead. Check the weather forecast the night before and allow extra time in the morning. You can use a windscreen cover overnight to prevent frost from forming in the first place.

Secure your vehicle properly. Always ensure your doors are locked and windows are shut when you are not in the car. Never leave valuables on display.

Be aware of your insurance policy. Many car insurance policies will not pay out if a vehicle is stolen while left unattended with the keys in the ignition, as you may be considered responsible for the theft.

Report suspicious activity. If you notice anyone trying car door handles or looking into vehicles, report it to the police on 101, or call 999 in an emergency
