Dear Residents
Northamptonshire Police is reminding road users to be prepared for adverse weather conditions and to use caution when out and about on the county’s roads, as Storm Goretti is forecast to hit the county from this evening (Thursday, January 8). The Met Office has issued an Amber weather warning for snow and strong winds in Northamptonshire from Thursday evening (8 January) into Friday (9 January), and people are being urged to be prepared for driving in wintry conditions to help keep them and other road users safe. Detective Chief Superintendent Rich Tompkins said: “The forecast for snow and windy conditions in Northamptonshire means motorists are likely to experience some difficult driving conditions across the county overnight and into tomorrow morning. “If your journey is not essential and can be saved for another day, you may wish to postpone your trip for when this weather system has moved on. However, if you do need to travel, please do take sensible precautions and heed the advice below and that being shared by other emergency services and motoring organisations. “We’re liaising with colleagues from organisations across Northamptonshire having invoked established Local Resilience Forum processes. This is to ensure we’re co-ordinated in our response to the expected inclement weather. “It’s essential that we are able to respond quickly to any problems that arise because of the wintry conditions and to allow us to be as well prepared as possible. “Many organisations are sharing useful information about their services on social media, so please follow them to get their most recent updates.” Tips for driving in snow and ice: Clear all windows of snow and ice before setting off Allow extra time for your journey and take warm clothes and drinks with you Make sure your vehicle is equipped with the essentials – have plenty of fuel, screen wash and de-icer; consider carrying a shovel and make sure you have a torch and high vis clothing just in case Drive sensibly and cautiously, and slow down and increase braking distances Brake early and gently for junctions and bends
