Most burglaries are opportunistic but there is evidence that some burglars are using individuals as “spotters” to find vulnerable properties to break into. They may pose as delivery drivers or door-to-door callers offering services or delivering flyers or may be seen filming or observing homes from the street. Always report anything suspicious immediately by calling 101 or 999 in an emergency. There are a number of steps you can take: - Maintain a "lived-in" look:
Use smart timers to turn lights and a radio on and off. Ask a trusted neighbour to collect post, clear flyers, move bins, and open/close curtains. Avoid posting holiday plans or photos on social media until you return. - Enhance physical security:
Install and use a visible, accredited burglar alarm system. Fit motion-activated security lights at the front and back of your property. Ensure all doors and windows are securely locked, even when you are home. Consider CCTV cameras, video doorbells, and robust locks. - Be vigilant:
Report any suspicious activity, people, or vehicles to the police immediately. Remove any unusual markings, stickers, or items left on your doorstep and check your neighbours' properties as well.
