Christmas Lock Up - Operation Limit
It doesn’t matter what day of the year it is – driving under the influence of drink or drugs is still illegal.
And if you get behind the wheel when you’re over the limit, we’ll still stop you, breathalyse you and charge you.
❌ Even if it’s Christmas Day.
The drivers in this video found that out the hard way, as they were arrested on one of the big dates – Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day or New Year’s Day.

We’re releasing the clips now as a reminder that even though we’re well into the new year, the same frustrations still apply. Throughout December, our Operation Limit campaign saw officers carrying out extra patrols to crack down on those who drive while under the influence.
During the last week of our campaign, 26 drivers were arrested for failing a roadside breath test or failing to provide a specimen, with eight of those following a collision. One of those was more than three and a half times the limit, providing a reading of 127. The legal limit is 35. Other readings recorded were 109, 96 and 93.
A further 16 people were arrested on suspicion of drug driving, with one of those following a crash.
In total during the campaign, which ran from 1 December to 1 January, 114 people tested positive for alcohol or drugs with 28 of those following collisions.
Our message is always the same – driving under the influence is not worth the risk. You could lose your licence, your livelihood, or your life. You could even kill someone innocent.
So just remember. If you want to wake up in your own cosy bed instead of one of our slightly less cosy custody cells… don’t drive under the influence of drink or drugs.
You can do your part in helping us stop drink or drug driving by calling out loved ones' behaviours, and reporting to us when you think someone is at risk.
