I wanted to provide you with an update regarding Road safety issues (Speeding), which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey. ๐ฆ Community Speedwatch โ Making Roads Safer Kent Police runs Community Speedwatch, a volunteer-led initiative focused on reducing speeding and improving safety. What is Speedwatch? ๐ฅ Local volunteers, trained by Kent Police, monitor speeds at approved sites (20, 30, or 40 mph zones) using certified equipment. ๐ Details of speeding vehicles are securely logged for 12 months. Repeat or excessive offenders may receive advisory lettersโand in some cases, personal visits from officers. Important: Speedwatch is educational, not enforcement. No fines or penalty points are issued directly, but the data helps target police action and inform road safety improvements. โ
Does it work? Yes! Over 90% of drivers recorded speeding once are not seen again within 12 months, and overall speeding reduces in communities over time. ๐ Want to help? If you can spare an hour a week, join us! ๐ www.kent.police.uk/speedwatch On 14/01/26 โ 3 officers and 2 PCSOโs deployed to THE LEAS/WEST TERRACE, FOLKESTONE with a speed gun. This was in response to local residents campaigning and reporting at Ward Surgeries that there is a continuous problem with speeding, nuisance vehicles and those with noticeable vehicle defects in the area, at all times of the day and night. Discussions were made with SPEEDWATCH Co-ordinators prior to the event to check evidence to support timings โ the data is drawn from mobile technologies such as satellite navigation devices which shows that 85% of vehicles travel at or below 24mph. There are no specific days, dates or times to show any temporal peak time of focus.
Officers worked in this area for 1 hour where only 4 vehicles were required to stop during this time, with just one offence of driving above the 20mph speed restriction zone. All other vehicles stopped were spoken with and appropriate words of advice issued or for documentation checks to be made. All documentation matters were reported to be all in order.
The operation then moved to commonly reported SHORNCLIFFE ROAD/EARLS AVENUE area - A wider stretch of road where speeding is often reported/noted near to bus stops and the busy college area.
