Staffordshire Police would like to make local residents and businesses aware that we have received reports of individuals attempting to use fake banknotes to pay for goods in the area. We are asking shop owners, hospitality venues, and anyone handling cash to remain extra vigilant. Advice for Local BusinessesTo help protect your business, please take a few simple precautions: 🔍 Check all banknotes carefully before accepting them Look for common security features such as raised print, holograms, watermarks, and the metallic thread. 🔢 Verify serial numbers If you receive multiple notes at once, check that the serial numbers are not identical, as counterfeit batches often carry matching numbers. 💷 Use note-checking tools where possible UV lamps, counterfeit detector pens, and tactile checks can help identify fake currency quickly. 🧾 Be cautious with high‑value notes If something feels unusual about the transaction or the note itself, trust your instincts and carry out additional checks. If You Suspect a Fake Note- Do not return the note to the person who handed it over.
- Try to retain it without. Never put yourself at risk to do so.
- Note the time, description of the individual, and any vehicle details if safe to do so, keep any CCTV footage of the person.
