I wanted to provide you an update regarding Personal theft (e.g. pick pocketing, no violence used), which some members around this area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the Met Engage priority survey. Good morning all,
Please be aware that we have had reports of people loitering around cash-points/ATMs in Sutton High Street, asking members of the public to use a specific cash-point.
Upon this cash-point being used, money that has been drawn out has been stolen from the member of the public. This is generally called a distraction/Cash Grab: Someone grabs your money as it is dispensed or distracts you (e.g., dropping money) to steal your card or money.
Please see the below crime prevention advice to avoid this type of crime happening to you or someone you know.
Approaching the cash-point
Scan the Area: Before approaching, check your surroundings for suspicious individuals or groups, especially at night or in quiet areas.
Use Secure Locations: Opt for machines inside bank branches or in high-traffic, well-lit, and CCTV-monitored areas.
Use the "Buddy System": If possible, have someone with you, or use a cash-point that has staff nearby.
Do no not use: If someone asks you to use a specific cash point for any reason, do not use it! Using the cash-point
Check the Keypad: If the keypad feels loose, thick, or spongy, it may be a false keypad installed to record your PIN.
Cover Your PIN: Always shield the keypad with your hand or body, even if you are alone, to prevent cameras or "shoulder surfers" from seeing your PIN.
Inspect for Tampering (Skimming): Look for suspicious attachments on the card slot, such as loose, crooked, or damaged parts, or unusual color schemes that don't match the bank's or business branding. If something looks or feels off, don't use the cash point and use another one.
Avoid Distractions: Do not let anyone distract you or offer "help," even if your card is stuck or the machine is acting up. If someone tries to interfere, cancel the transaction and leave.
After using the cash-point
Put Money Away Immediately: Do not count your cash at the machine. Secure your card and money immediately and leave the area quickly.
Secure Your Receipt: Either take your receipt with you or shred it. Receipts can contain partial card details or personal information.
If Your Card is Retained: If the machine keeps your card, call your bank immediately, ideally while still at the machine, to prevent fraud.
Check Accounts Regularly: Regularly review your bank statements for any suspicious activity.
If you have any concerns about using a cash-point/ATM, please do not use it, inform the business it is attached to and contact the police on either 101 or report it online via www.met.police.uk.
If there is a crime happening at the time or there is an emergency such as threat to life, please call 999.
