ATM Distraction fraud

Dear all,

We received a reports of individuals being targeted at cash machine by the suspects using distraction techniques.

How the scams works:

Offender's place a device or object around or under the the ATM machine to interfere with the transaction. They then approach the victim , claiming the machine is not working and attempt to distract them. Shortly afterwards, money may be withdrawn from the victim's account. These incident is happening in random times of the day. Edgware Safer Neighbourhood Team is aware of this ongoing activity and will continue to conduct a high visibility patrol around the area.

Please follow these safety tips:

Cover your PIN: Use your free hand to cover the keypad when entering your PIN to prevent it from being seen or captured.

Avoid poorly lit areas: Choose ATMs located in well-lit and busy area, preferably indoors or in a bank.

Scan the area: Always check the surroundings are for any suspicious activity or devices before using the ATM machine.

Be aware of your surroundings: Stay vigilant and avoid distractions that could lead to being easily targeted.

Report suspicious activity: If you notice unusual behaviour or signs of tampering, immediately report it to the bank and the police.
