Do You Know Where Your Children Are?
We are issuing this message following an increase in calls regarding groups of young people entering abandoned and derelict buildings in Lancaster area.
While this activity is often described online as “urban exploring,” the reality is that these locations pose serious and sometimes life-threatening risks.
The Dangers Are Real
Abandoned buildings are not safe environments. They may contain:
* Unstable floors, collapsing ceilings, and hidden shafts * Exposed wiring and electrical hazards * Asbestos and other harmful materials * Broken glass, sharp metal, and hazardous debris * Open basements or lift shafts * Unsafe roofing and height-related fall risks * Drug paraphernalia or other dangerous items
Many of these structures are structurally unsound and can deteriorate without warning. What may appear to be an exciting adventure can quickly turn into a medical emergency.
We are aware that some social media pages and online communities promote “exploring” abandoned sites, often sharing photos and videos that make these locations appear exciting or harmless, However:
* These videos rarely show the full risks involved. * They may encourage young people to take greater risks for views or attention. * Trespassing into these properties is illegal and can result in criminal consequences.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to speak with their children about the content they are viewing online and the potential pressures to participate in risky activities for social media recognition.
* Please check where your children are, particularly during evenings and weekends. * Talk openly about the dangers of entering abandoned buildings. * Remind them that trespassing is an offence and can have long-term consequences. * Report concerns about unsafe or unsecured buildings to the appropriate authorities.
Our priority is the safety of young people in our community. We would much rather prevent a tragedy than respond to one.
If you have concerns about activity in abandoned properties or believe someone may be at risk, please contact us through the appropriate non-emergency channels or reply to this message.
Let’s work together to keep our young people safe.
