Morning Resident
Ask for Angela is a safety initiative supported by West Midlands Police (WMP) that allows people who feel unsafe or vulnerable while on a date or night out to discreetly signal for help. By approaching staff at a participating venue and asking to speak with "Angela," you alert them that you need assistance without drawing attention to yourself.
How It Works The Code Word: Simply ask a member of bar staff, security, or even a DJ, "Is Angela working?" or "Can I speak to Angela?". Discreet Support: Trained staff will understand the request and can assist by:
Participating Locations WMP actively tests and promotes the scheme across the region, including in bars, clubs, and more recently, hotels. Participating venues often display "Ask for Angela" posters in restrooms or near the bar.
Birmingham: Recently expanded to include city-centre hotels. Highly rated venues like Albert's Schloss, Slug and Lettuce (Brindley Place), The Dragon Inn, and Mama Roux’s have recently passed "mystery shop" safety tests with a 100% success rate. Wolverhampton: The scheme is widely established in over 28 venues, including the Grand Theatre, Mander Shopping Centre, and multiple university buildings. Coventry & Solihull: The scheme is promoted by local Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) and the Coventry City Council, with ongoing staff training to ensure a consistent response.
Additional Safety Tools West Midlands Police also promotes the Hollie Guard app, which allows users to alert emergency contacts or authorities with real-time tracking if they feel in danger. In the Colmore Business District, the app even shows "pins" on a map to signpost users to the nearest venue participating in safety schemes
