Yesterday's school visit |
Some people say this to us; “I couldn't do what you do”. But after a visit yesterday, what we do felt like a drop in the ocean. We had the absolute pleasure of visiting the Perseid Upper School in Morden yesterday, and met their wonderful students. If you don't know the teachers and staff there work with young people, aged 3-19 who have severe and complex learning difficulties and learners with an additional diagnosis of autism and/or physical/sensory difficulties. In small groups, these amazing children and young adults came out to see our police van, meet us and have a chat with the team, and I must admit, at one point, I teared up. To see what they were dealing with made me want to thank each of the careers, teaching assistants and staff who were exemplary in how they looked after the differing levels of needs the young people had. What we do, as police, can be hard, horrid, and as I've written before “your worst day is our every day." But the staff at the school? I came away wanting each and every one of them to get the absolute highest recognition that humanity could offer. Those are real heroes in our community.
I can't say any more than the above, and thank the school for the honour of allowing our visit.
