Smart Alert – Online Blackmail Targeting Young People

We are seeing a rise in reports of electronically‑enabled blackmail involving young people on platforms such as Telegram, Instagram and other social media apps.

Offenders are targeting teenagers online, encouraging them to share private images or videos. Once obtained, the offender records or saves the content and threatens to send it to the young person’s friends, followers, or contacts unless money is paid.

Important Advice for Young People

Do NOT send any money. Paying will not stop the offender — they will continue to demand more.

Report it immediately.
You are not in trouble, and you are not alone. These incidents can be extremely distressing, but the Police can still complete checks that may help identify offenders.

Do not feel embarrassed.
Offenders are skilled at manipulation and often target large numbers of young people.

Save any evidence you can, such as usernames, screenshots, or links — but do not continue contact with the offender.

Tell a trusted adult (parent, guardian, teacher, youth worker, etc.).

Why It’s Difficult to Stop the Images Being Sent

Many offenders operate from outside the UK, using anonymous accounts. Because of this:

We are unable to prevent the images being distributed, and

It is usually not possible to retrieve any money once it has been sent.

However, reporting still helps — it provides intelligence, supports safeguarding, and may assist in wider investigations.
