Local Priorities Shoplifting Message

I wanted to provide you an update regarding Shoplifting, which members around this area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the Met Engage priority survey.

On Tuesday 10th March 2026, De Beauvoir and Hoxton West Safer Neighbourhood Team officers were conducting CCTV enquiries in the area of Kingsland Road, when a call relating to a shoplifter from CO-OP, New North Road, N1 was circulated. Response officers got to the scene and it was alleged the suspect attempted to steal from the shop and brandished a knife when challenged by staff.

The suspect fled on a bicycle and response officers were searching the area for suspect. Local officers made their way to Nuttall Street, when the suspect rode towards them. Upon seeing officers the suspect fled into the Whitmore Estate, and a foot chase began. After cutting through the estate, officers managed to intercept and get the suspect off his bicycle and detained under Section 1 PACE. The male was identified as the shoplifter and known to local officers as a prolific shoplifter targeting CO-OP on New North Road and TESCO on Southgate Road.

The suspect was then arrested for Robbery and Attempted GBH and taken into Police Custody where the investigation continued. The suspect has been charged with the offences and is remanded to court.

Shoplifting is a crime that can have a substantial negative impact on local businesses across London. If you notice anything suspicious or witness anyone shoplifting, please report it as soon as possible. These reports are invaluable in letting us build a picture of when and where shop lifters operate, meaning we can be in the right place at the right time to arrest those responsible.
